Our Histroy
The Windknot Club was founded in June 1991 with the following 13
charter members: K. Owen; D. French; J. v.d. Merwe; J. de Vos; M.
Smit; R. Eksteen; W. Mears; R. McKechnie; C. Meredith; D. Lourens; D.
Morar; A. Venter and N. Jacobz.
In the first year of existence, membership grew to 37 members with the
Club offering a host of activities such as casting lessons by Mark
Yelland and a yellowfish seminar by Dr Louis Wolhuter. A
Newsletter known as “The Windknot” was regularly sent to members.
It was these pioneering events that served as the foundation for the
Club’s successful existence today. The involvement and dedication
of those charter members served as the building blocks.
The original Club waters were on the Vaal River near Vaal Reefs No. 10 Shaft. A rustic clubhouse was also established.
The raison d’etere of the Club was and always will be the promotion of
responsible yellowfish fly-fishing and the Conservation of that aquatic
species.
The Club grew from strength to strength over the ensuing years.
Then in 1997 under the chairmanship of Harvey Venter the first “Bells
FOSAF/Windknot Yellowfish Exposition” was held at the Elgro River Lodge
in the Vredefort Dome. This event was and still is one of the
premier yellowfish fly-fishing events in the country. Today
around 90 flyfishermen from all over the country partake in this event.
The ethos of the Club is about catch-and-release in order that future
generations can also enjoy the noble sport of yellowfish fly-fishing.
The Club currently boasts a healthy, dedicated membership with Club waters at the Elgro River Lodge.
