Trip to Taung Dam, November 2013

We recently visited the Taung Dam in the North West Province. We picked up Mark Yelland in Johannesburg and met the Italian team of Agostino and Rob at the dam.

Taung is a beautiful dam, it is very clear and has deep sections with overhanging cliffs. The water level is currently lower than it normally is, and this allowed Jeremy Grace and I to walk the cliffs and look for cruising yellows.

Most of the smallmouth and largemouth yellows caught were taken on foam hoppers and Dave’s hoppers. We fished to a boiling pot of rising fish one evening, and it was quite unbelievable to see yellows attacking an Elk hair caddis in almost complete darkness.

The group camped on the banks of the dam and all in all a very enjoyable weekend with Agostino once again showing off his special culinary skills. The weekend would have been slightly better if I had remembered to bring my sleeping bag along!        DSC00657

  1. Where did you stay? I would like to go camp at the dam but have no idea whom to contact. Could you please forward me some telephone no’s?

    • There are no camp grounds around the dam. Usually you take a few buddies with and someone (like a gardener) to look after your camp since burglary is a problem in the area.

I would suggest you attend a club meeting if at all possible or contact our chairman. The dates for the meetings are on the yearplanner and the chairman’s contact info is on the contact page. He fishes there regularly and if you are lucky he will be willing to go with.
